What is Chiron?
Chiron is the next step in a boy's education. While still keeping a focus on adventure, imagination, curiosity, and wonder, Chiron will be a deep dive into literature and poetry, history, philosophy, astronomy, woodworking, writing, drama, and music.
But the curriculum will never be just about content. The boys might roleplay the debates of the Roman Senate, engineer an aqueduct or a Roman road (by mixing historically accurate concrete).
An outdoor adventure component in conjunction with basic military training will help them grow into strong and courageous young men. And, learning the beautiful prayers and hymns of our Christian faith will help them grow on the inside to be disciples of Our Lord.
Why "Chiron"?
In Greek mythology, unlike other centaurs, who were barely better than animals, Chiron was a gifted scholar who taught the likes of Jason (the navigator) Achilles (the warrior), and Theseus (the Explorer). His role was to teach and train these young men so that each might fulfill the great destiny towards which he had been called.
Greek mythology and philosophy have long inspired Christian theologians, including St. Augustine, who drew on Plato, and St. Thomas Aquinas, who drew on Aristotle. Writers, including Shakespeare, Chaucer, and C.S. Lewis also incorporated mythology to inspire, inform, and illustrate.
J.R.R. Tolkien used the term “splintered light” to describe how God’s truth is reflected in every culture, civilization, and religion throughout the world and throughout all history. Even if it is only a small gleam, that light is still His Light of creation.
Boys learn through adventure, story, song, and challenge. That is why Chiron is the perfect name for this program. We are teaching them by adventure and for the adventure ahead!
