Tutorial FAQ
How many days a week do boys attend Tutorial?
Each boy only attends Tutorial one day per week. When you register, you will choose which day of the week you prefer based on the spots we have available.
Can my son sign up for two days of Tutorial?
No. The same material is presented each day of the week. He would be doing the same thing twice.
What does a typical day at Tutorial look like?
Morning time is spent on creative projects and the afternoon is usually reserved for "guilds." These might include crafting something in the workshop, adventuring in the outdoors, or presenting a theatrical skit for parents.
Is there homework?
Time is given to work on the projects during the Tutorial day, and the Tutors are available to assist with writing or building. However, oftentimes, there is not enough time for a boy to finish during the day and he will have to work on a project at home in order to complete it for the next week.
Are there any time obligations outside of the Tutorial Day?
In September, we mark the birthday of the esteemed Hobbit Bilbo Baggins with a festival. We celebrate on a Saturday evening. Tutorial boys are required to attend. The first few weeks of the Tutorial year are spent preparing skits and presentations for this event. The whole family is invited to attend (and most dress up as hobbits or other characters from Lord of the Rings). Throughout the year, the boys prepare other projects and performances that parents are welcome to attend during the Tutorial Day.
How does Tutorial fit into my homeschool curriculum?
The Tutorial program is full of literature, creative writing, and nature studies. There is an overarching theme each year that is reflected in the projects and the guilds. For example, 2025-26 has been the West, with a focus on Native Americans. 2026-27 will be Ancient Rome.
Is there a faith component to Tutorial?
Riverside is a prayerful community in which there are many denominations of the Christian faith represented, as well as fellow pilgrims who seek an educational community rooted in beauty, goodness, and truth. Though we profess a Catholic view of the human person and purpose of education, we are dedicated to finding common ground with the various wings of Christendom through an understanding of the sacramental imagination expressed particularly well by J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis.
